McPherson is acclaimed as one of the finest historians writing today and a preeminent commentator on the Civil War. He was awarded the Pritzker Military Library Literature Award for lifetime achievement in military history-the first recipient of this prize-in 2007.James M. McPherson won a Pulitzer Prize in 1989 for Battle Cry of Freedom and the Lincoln Prize in 1998 for For Cause and Comrades and in 2009 (as a corecipient) for Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief. He was president of the American Historical Association, and he delivered the Jefferson Lecture in the Humanities in 2000.
